Sweden’s first accelerator program for civil-military innovation was concluded in front of a packed hall at the Air Force Museum in Linköping. More than 150 participants from the Swedish Armed Forces, the innovation system and industry gathered to take part in the companies’ presentations.
– “We are incredibly pleased with the great commitment and interest. It was a memorable end to six intense months,” says Catharina Sandberg, CEO of LEAD.
During the final day, the 15 participating companies presented their innovations that can strengthen Sweden’s defense and preparedness in various ways. The innovations span areas such as artificial intelligence, sensor systems, energy recovery and communication technology. The day also included panel discussions and closing keynotes from both the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV).
– “This collaboration is very important for the Swedish Armed Forces, as it has been our way in to create relationships and meet small companies that we normally have no relationship with. Together we have an important task in finding ways into defense innovation, something we would not have been able to do on our own, says Malin Ahlander from the Swedish Armed Forces.
The accelerator, which is the first of its kind in Sweden, has been run by LEAD in collaboration with the Swedish Armed Forces and Vinnova. The mission comes from the government and aims to give startups the opportunity to develop dual-use technology – both civilian and military – in close collaboration with the defense sector.
Already tangible results
The program has already started to produce results. During the spring, two of the companies have signed defense-related agreements and several other business dialogues are underway.
– “This program shows that there is a strong will and capacity to address Sweden’s security challenges through innovation and collaboration. It’s not just about technology – it’s about people, trust and cross-border cooperation,” says Catharina Sandberg.
To be continued
– We are incredibly proud of the progress the companies have made in such a short time. And this is just the beginning. With continued support from our partners and the strong innovation environment we have in Sweden, we can together create solutions that strengthen both defense and Sweden’s entire preparedness,” continues Catharina Sandberg.
The next round of the accelerator program will start in December 2025. Read more about it.
