Ligna Energy is an inspiring example of how innovative research results from academia can flourish into successful companies with the potential to make a real difference in the world. With its strong focus on sustainability, we are proud to call Ligna Energy a LEAD alumni.

Ligna Energy joined LEAD in 2018, but the company has been around since 2017 and is based on several years of research at Linköping University. The company, led by CEO Peter Ringstad, strives to develop energy storage solutions that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

In 2017, an innovative material concept based on lignin took its first steps towards commercialization in the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE) research group at Linköping University. Over time, Ligna Energy has transitioned from experimentation in a lab environment to practical manufacturing in Norrköping’s industrial area.

Our society is becoming increasingly digitalized, but powering this digital transformation requires a lot of energy. Without sustainable energy storage solutions, this revolution could put significant pressure on our planet’s limited resources. Ligna Energy offers a green solution for energy storage.

“The driving force for me is to make a difference and of course have fun doing it.”

Peter Ringstad, CEO of Ligna Energy

LEAD and Linköping University work closely together in commercializing research results. With Peter’s entrepreneurial skills and early membership, the company’s journey from lab to market was facilitated. During Ligna Energy’s time with LEAD, they have received help and support with business plan, networking and market verification. In the summer of 2023, they were ready to stand on their own two feet and were then “kicked out” of LEAD and now they have offices and manufacturing in Norrköping.
